Experience Africa's Big Five up close

As the largest wildlife park in the Benelux, we bring the African savannahs to the Netherlands! With us, you can see the animals of the Big Five without taking a trip to Africa. Discover five of Africa's most iconic animals - the lion, elephant, buffalo, panther and rhino in an environment where welfare and education are paramount.

What is the Big Five?

The Big Five are Africa's most iconic animals: the lion, elephant, buffalo, panther and rhino. Originally, the term was unfortunately coined by hunters; in fact, it refers to the five most difficult animals to hunt. Fortunately, it is now mostly a term for nature lovers who just want to shoot beautiful pictures of the animals.

The Big Five at Beekse Bergen need not fear hunters. The animals have spacious stays with plenty of enrichment and the best possible care. However, their counterparts in Africa have a hard time, including poaching, human-animal conflicts and an ever-shrinking habitat. Beekse Bergen is doing everything possible to protect these beautiful animals and preserve their habitats.

Leo

The African lion is known as the "king of the jungle," despite living mostly on savannahs. Lions are a symbol of strength and courage and are one of the most popular animals to spot during a safari.

Panther (also called leopard)

This solitary animal is a master of camouflage. Panthers are nocturnal animals and use their speed and strength to hunt prey. Panthers can hide well, making them often difficult to spot.

Elephant

The African elephant is the largest land animal in the world, with adult males weighing up to 6,000 kg. Elephants use their trunks to communicate, collect food and drink water.

Rhinoceros

Both the pointed rhinoceros and Southern white rhinoceros are seriously threatened by poaching because of their valuable horns. Nature conservation programs are underway to protect these unique animals.

Buffalo

The Cape buffalo may seem like a quieter animal, but it is known for its unpredictable and sometimes aggressive behavior. They often live in large herds and are particularly strong and good at defending themselves against predators, such as lions.
