Many young animals born in Safaripark Beekse Bergen
Hilvarenbeek, Wednesday, May 3 - In April, a birth wave took place in Safaripark Beekse Bergen. Six animal species gave birth to a total of thirteen young.
One of these young animals is the Banteng. The species is threatened with extinction. In fact, its habitat in Asia is getting smaller and smaller because palm oil is being extracted in these areas. In addition, the animal is kept as pets or hunted for its horns and meat. In the wild the cattle also mate with other cattle species and therefore the pure genes are lost.
Also, two Cape buffalo were born. The species is not endangered in the wild, but there is a management program for this species. Habitat is getting smaller and smaller and this species is also hunted for its horns.
European zoos are working together on a management program to maintain a healthy reserve population for the endangered animals.
Also born were two Steppe zebras, two Père David's deer, one Bactrian camel and five Vietnamese sika deer. The newborns are mostly found on the car safari route.
