Fourth Nubian giraffe born at Beekse Bergen

Fourth Nubian giraffe born in a month at Beekse Bergen

It's party time again at Safaripark Beekse Bergen! After the recent births of three Nubian giraffes earlier this month, we were able to welcome a fourth cub on Friday, January 24. The male has been given the name Iggy.

Rolf Veenhuizen, head of animal care, says, "We were expecting another birth, but it remains a special moment when a cub comes into the world healthy. Mother and son are doing well."

Like his half-brothers Bata and Kito and half-sister Milele, Iggy stays behind the scenes with his mother for the time being to settle in peacefully. They can already be admired in the visitor area. As soon as conditions allow, the young giraffes will be seen on the savannahs together with the rest of the group.

Species conservation
The birth of Iggy contributes to the conservation of the Nubian giraffe, a vulnerable species increasingly under pressure in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching. Safaripark Beekse Bergen is therefore participating in the European Management Program (EEP) for Nubian giraffes. This program aims to maintain a healthy reserve population of these animals in zoos.

Safaripark supports through Stichting Wildlife the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). This organization focuses entirely on the protection of giraffes in the wild. Through research, protection and education, the foundation tries to stop the decline of giraffe populations.
