Przewalski's horse from Beekse Bergen arrived in Kazakhstan to be released into the wild
The Przewalski's horse that departed Beekse Bergen in February to be released into the wild has arrived in Kazakhstan.
After a short period at Tiergarten Berlin, where a number of animals that will be released in Kazakhstan were brought together, the mare traveled to Kazakhstan, where she will eventually be released into the wild.
As a result, wild Przewalski's horses will soon be roaming this Asian country for the first time in over two hundred years.
For now, she is still with three other mares in a 25-acre fenced area, where they can get used to the new environment. They will stay here through the winter and next year a stallion will be added to the group.
Przewalski's horses originally occurred on the grassy plains of Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan. The species became extinct in the wild due to hunting and habitat loss. Przewalski's horses were found only in zoos.
Almost every animal species has its own European management program, called an EEP. That of the Przewalski's horse is with the Prague Zoo. The coordinator is also responsible for selecting genetically interesting horses for reintroduction to Kazakhstan.
The mare from Beekse Bergen was chosen because she is young and stands her ground against the other horses. The animal's genes were also considered and they are perfect for breeding.
The ultimate goal is to place a herd of 35 horses in the wild in Kazakhstan.
