Savannahs of Safari Hotel complete
Savannahs of Safari Hotel complete by arrival of Sable antelope
With the entrance of the Sable antelope at the Safari Hotel, the savannah is complete. Recently a few bucks of this species have been walking around. The animals are still young and therefore inexperienced and not fully grown. On the savannahs they are allowed to grow up until they are full-fledged jet-black bucks.
The antelope species is threatened in the wild, which is why there is a management program for this species. The management program ensures a healthy reserve population at the European level.
An important part of this program happens on the savannahs: because the bucks are still young and inexperienced, they are not yet accepted by an already existing herd - which consists only of female antelopes. At the Safari Hotel they are given room to grow up. When there is a demand from a European zoo for a male Sable antelope, one of the bucks will depart to make its contribution to the management program. This will not happen for the next few years. The bucks will need another 2 to 3 years to grow up.
In all probability, one of these bucks, a male from Copenhagen, will take his place in the large herd of the Safaripark in about 3 years. Only the males of this species get the black coloring mentioned in the name from which they get their name.
